A Human Art Project

In homage to the enlightenment, let me begin by employing the following metaphor. Think of there being a light within us. Imagine that it grows brighter when we love, or show compassion or lend some meaning to our short existence. Envisage it growing dim if we fail to take responsibility for what we do with that existence. Bear with me and assume that this light represents our life.

Nothing we know, or can know, tells us that the light was breathed into us by some supernatural entity, though this is what many still believe. Everything we have learned in any meaningful sense of the word, alludes to our animal ancestry. Careful observation and analysis of the world around us tells those who have open minds that we too are evolving animals, albeit self conscious ones. The light of our humanity is but one flame in the fire of life on earth.

The fact we are biological entities does not make our existence any less awe inspiring or enigmatic. Quite the reverse. The origins of life remain a great mystery, but not one we shall solve through superstition. Thinking this way not only poses us questions to solve about our origins, it leaves us with decisions to make about our futures, and what we intend to do with the time we have. We are left facing a truth that, if we choose to think for ourselves about such things, then the purpose of our life is that purpose which we choose to give it.

There are many people all over the world who live lives of unbounded misery. Some people inflict such misery on others with seeming impunity. If we reject the idea that such people will get what is due to them in an afterlife, we are provided with one such purpose. Seeking justice, and accepting the responsibility for seeing it done as far as humanly possible,  here on earth, in our lifetimes.

Accepting what we are, and rejecting myths of god, has a liberating and refreshing honesty about it. There is no structure behind which we can sweep the awkward questions about inequity and irrationality. Far from feeling that there is something absent from our lives, we can and do live positive, happy, purposeful and fulfilling lives. Together, we can help others to do the same.

Let your lights shine.
